Children who have asthma tend to have an overly sensitive immune system, causing airways in their lungs to become inflamed and swollen when they are exposed to things like smoke or allergens. When this occurs–and the airways become swollen–the lungs fill with thick mucus, and this leads to the asthma symptoms. Children who have asthma have inflamed air passages. Leukotriene antagonists help because they open up the airways by reducing the swelling. Childhood asthma is a disease that can lead to death if left untreated. However, it can be difficult to recognize asthma symptoms in children.
