The Sport of Pocket Bike Racing
Racing pocket bikes, also known as Mini GP racing or Minimoto racing, is racing that is done with the use of miniature versions of full size motorcycles, also known as pocket bikes. Pocket bikes racing takes place on kart tracks. It is a very popular form of racing in Japan and Europe, and is gaining enthusiasts in many other countries, in particular in the US.
In general a pocket bike is around one quarter the size of a normal motorcycle, and has an internal combustion engine of about 45cc outputting form 3 to 15hp, which varies with the particular model. Pocket bikes have no suspension, instead they rely on the tires absorbing bumps. Most weigh approximately 50 pounds. Models for newcomers often output roughly 3 to 4 hp, while more expensive models produce more power. The very best racing pocket bikes have a very favorable power-to-weight ratio. Modifications are often used to enhance acceleration and speed. Even though they are tiny, both children and adults race pocket bikes at speeds of up to fifty five mph under good conditions.
Pocket bikes are small and easy to transport, and they are cheap to buy which increases their attractiveness to both adults and children. The cheapest pocket bikes from China start at around $200 for a no frills model, while you could pay as much as as $4000 for a top of the line Italian bike. Children from around six can learn the motorcycle basics while adults can feel all the thrills of motorbike racing without the high costs and heavy risks associated with the usual full size motorcycle racing.
