Check your auction house for a while to see when ore sells cheapest, or cut a arrangement with a miner on your server to offload all his ore to you en masse for a good price. Get as much ore as possible, and prospect it. Cut the gems and sell them on the auction house for a massive windfall. Once you work out your average earnings per stack of ore, you can easily work out how much you can afford to pay, and any time there’s a stack for less than that price, you can prospect it for quick gold.
